Gold Wallpaper: Metallic and Luxury Designs That Elevate Every Room

Six gold looks, the rooms they suit, and what to put beside them. Every mural below is printed to your wall size.

The short version

  • Put gold on one wall. Choose the wall your eye lands on first: behind the bed, the sofa or the dining table.
  • Gold on a dark ground looks richest. Black, plum and navy make gold glow. Gold on ivory looks softest.
  • Our gold is printed colour with a matte finish. It looks like gilding in a painting, not mirror-shine foil. A $30 sample shows how it reads in your light.
  • Keep one metal in the room. Warm brass suits warm gold.

What gold wallpaper looks like in a real room

Gold changes with the light more than any other wall colour. In daylight, printed gold reads as antique ochre and brass. Under warm evening bulbs it turns honey and glows. That shift is why gold feels alive on a wall, and it is why you should see a sample before you choose.

A note on finish: the gold in our murals is printed colour on a matte surface. It is painted to look like gilding, with leaf edges, veining and highlights, but it is not metallic foil, so there is no mirror shine or glare. That keeps the wall calm in photos and on video calls, and the artwork looks the same from every angle.

Every design is made to order in your wall's width and height, in peel and stick, non-woven or pre-pasted. If you rent, peel and stick comes off without paste.

New designs

Six gold wallpaper looks, and a mural for each

Each mural below is a real design you can order. The photos show it on a wall in a styled room.

Black and gold

Black and gold: dried flowers on charcoal

Ivory flower heads, gold-leaf foliage and slate-blue ferns sit on a near-black ground, like a pressed-flower study lit by candlelight. It is the most dramatic gold look in this guide, and the easiest to live with in small, enclosed rooms.

Plum and gold

Plum and gold: a jewel-tone alternative to black

Golden foliage and silver leaves float on a deep aubergine ground with a faint velvety texture. Plum feels warmer and softer than black or navy, so you get the drama of a dark wall with a friendlier mood. The silver adds a cool note that keeps the gold from feeling heavy.

Blue and gold

Soft blue and gold: cranes, magnolia and a quiet pond

A chinoiserie-inspired scene of two cranes beneath a magnolia branch, painted in teal, ivory and antique gold. It is the calmest gold look here, and the palette works in traditional and modern bedrooms alike.

Dark tropical

Dark tropical with a gold edge

Oversized black and ivory palm leaves, each edged in warm gold, fan out over layers of sage and forest green. The palette is limited, so it reads as an artwork instead of a busy pattern, which is why it works behind a bed.

Starry gold

Starry gold: a night sky above blue mountains

Thick, curling brushstrokes sweep a midnight-blue sky past golden stars, above layered mountains and a turquoise river. It has the movement of a fine-art painting, so it suits rooms where you sit and look: reading nooks, studies and music rooms.

Abstract gold

Abstract gold: clouds and a river of light

Smoky clouds and navy plumes, brushed with copper, are cut by a thin winding river of gold. It reads as one large oil painting with a warm accent that lifts the dark blues. In a small room it turns a plain wall into the room's art.

Styling

What to pair with gold wallpaper

Dark wood

Walnut, ebonised oak and dark timber ground a gold wall and stop it reading as flashy. The wood absorbs light while the gold reflects it, so both look better.

Velvet

Plum, forest green and midnight velvet give a gold wall the softness it needs. The pile catches light the way the gold in the artwork does.

Marble

White, cream or green marble on a console, table or fireplace gives a cool counterpoint to warm gold.

Warm lighting

Use warm bulbs and table lamps instead of one bright overhead light. Gold turns from flat to glowing under warm light, so plan the lighting before you pick the wall.

One metal

Keep a single metal in the room. Warm gold sits best with brass. Mixing brass, chrome and black fixtures around a gold wall makes the room look undecided.

Designer tip

Match the gold's temperature. Amber, honey and brass golds suit warm rooms with cream, walnut and terracotta. Champagne and pale golds suit cooler rooms with grey, blue and white. A warm gold in a cool room looks mismatched. If your room is cool, start with blue and gold murals.

How ordering works

  1. Pick a mural and your finish: peel and stick, non-woven or pre-pasted. Every design comes in all three.
  2. Enter your wall's width and height in the size calculator. Not sure how to measure? Use the measuring guide.
  3. Optional: order a $30 sample to check the gold and the finish in your own light.
  4. Prepare the wall: smooth, clean and primed, and a week after fresh paint. Our wall prep guide covers it. Your mural arrives in numbered panels, made for easy solo installation.

Common questions

Gold wallpaper FAQs

Is gold wallpaper real metallic foil?
No. The gold in our murals is printed colour on a matte surface, painted to look like gilding. You get the warmth and detail of gold without mirror shine or glare. A $30 sample shows how it reads in your own light.
What rooms suit gold wallpaper best?
Dining rooms, bedrooms, powder rooms and home offices. Gold on a dark ground suits dining rooms and powder rooms, softer gold on blue or ivory suits bedrooms, and dark florals suit offices and libraries.
Will gold wallpaper make my room look too busy?
Not if you use it on one wall. On a single wall it reads as art; on four it can overwhelm. Choose the wall you see first from the doorway, and keep the other walls calm in a warm white or soft greige.
Should I choose a warm gold or a cool gold?
Match the room. Warm golds (amber, honey, brass) suit cream, walnut and terracotta. Cooler golds (champagne, pale gold) suit grey, blue and white. If you are unsure, order a sample and hold it next to your furniture.
Can I use gold wallpaper in a small room?
Yes. Small rooms are often where it works best. In a powder room or a small dining room, a dark gold mural looks deliberate and intimate, not cramped.
Can renters use gold wallpaper?
Yes. Every design comes in peel and stick, which needs no paste and removes without damage from smooth, properly cured painted walls. Non-woven and pre-pasted finishes are there for permanent installs.
How can I see the gold before I order the full mural?
Order a sample. It costs $30 and shows you the colours and the finish in your own light before you commit to your wall size.
