Choosing the wrong wall for your feature wallpaper is the most common reason feature walls don't work. The right design on the wrong wall looks tentative and confused; the same design on the right wall looks decisive and excellent. This guide addresses the question that most wallpaper guides skip: not which design to choose but where to put it, and why the placement decision matters as much as the design decision.
Every room has a natural focal wall — the wall that sightlines converge on from the most frequently occupied positions. The feature wallpaper should go on this wall in the vast majority of cases. The instinct to protect the most visible wall and put the design somewhere less prominent produces the most common feature wall failure.

The wall you see first when entering any room — always the correct starting candidate for your feature wall decision.
The Bed Wall
Always the feature in a bedroom — the wall behind the headboard, centred and seen from every position in the room.
The TV or Fireplace Wall

Feature Wall Questions
What makes a good feature wall?
A good feature wall is the most naturally visible wall in the room — the one sightlines converge on from the primary seating or sleeping position. It should be largely uninterrupted by doors, windows, or radiators, and large enough to display the chosen design at its intended scale.
Should a feature wall be darker or lighter than the other walls?
Neither is a rule. The feature wall should have the design that serves the room — whether that design is darker, lighter, or simply more patterned than the surrounding walls. The contrast that matters is visual interest, not specifically tonal direction.
How do I choose between wallpaper and paint for a feature wall?
Wallpaper consistently outperforms paint as a feature wall treatment because it adds pattern, texture, and visual depth that paint cannot achieve. Paint is a background; wallpaper is a statement. If you are considering a feature wall, the choice is almost always wallpaper.
Can you have two feature walls in one room?
Technically possible but rarely advisable. Two feature walls compete rather than reinforce each other — one ends up dominant anyway, and the other reads as an error. One strong, well-placed feature wall is always more effective than two.
Does the size of the room affect which wall I choose?
Room size affects which design type to use more than which wall to choose. In a small room, the most visible wall is still the correct choice — but the design should suit the scale: a bold large-scale landscape in a small room creates drama; a fine-detailed pattern at the wrong scale can feel busy.
