The Installation Process

Follow these six steps in order. Each builds on the one before it.

Step One

Measure Your Wall Accurately

Measure wall height and width in inches from at least two different points. Walls are rarely perfectly uniform. Note the position of outlets, windows, and doors from the left edge and from the floor. Measuring tip: If height varies across the wall, use the tallest measurement to ensure full coverage top to bottom.

Step Two

Prepare the Wall Surface

Wipe the entire wall with isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth. Allow it to dry for at least two hours. Fill any holes or cracks with spackle, sand smooth once cured, and wipe away dust. A clean, smooth surface produces the strongest adhesion and the cleanest removal whenever you decide to change the design.

Important: Do not apply peel and stick wallpaper to walls painted fewer than 30 days ago, or to heavily textured surfaces. Test a hidden corner first if you are unsure.

Step Three

Mark a Plumb Vertical Line

Use a level and pencil to draw a faint vertical guide line where your first panel begins. Walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly level. This line ensures your first panel goes up straight, and every subsequent panel aligns correctly. Without it, even a small angle error at the start compounds across the full width of the wall.

Step Four

Apply the First Panel

Peel back the top six to eight inches of backing paper only. Align the panel top edge with the ceiling and your plumb line, then press firmly in place. Slowly pull the remaining backing downward with one hand while smoothing the panel flat with your other hand or a squeegee, working from the center outward to push air bubbles toward the edges.

Key technique: Never peel the entire backing at once. Peel as you go down the panel. This gives you control and prevents the adhesive from folding onto itself.

Step Five

Apply and Align All Remaining Panels

Each panel in your custom mural arrives numbered in sequence. Apply them side by side, butting edges together without overlapping. The pattern is pre-matched at the factory, so aligning the physical edges is all you need to do. Take your time at each seam and press the join firmly before moving to the next panel.

Step Six

Smooth, Trim, and Finish

Run a squeegee over the entire surface using firm, overlapping strokes. Pay extra attention to seams and edges. Trim any overhang at the ceiling or baseboard with a sharp craft knife held against a straight edge. Press seam lines firmly. Wipe away your guide line mark with a damp cloth. Step back and review from normal viewing distance before calling it done.

Install at Room Temperature

Apply between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold adhesive grips poorly. Excessive heat makes it overly aggressive and difficult to reposition.

Work with a Second Person

A partner makes tall panels dramatically easier. One person holds the top in position while the other smooths from the center downward.

Use Warmth for Stubborn Bubbles

Gently warm persistent small bubbles with a hair dryer for 10 to 15 seconds, then press firmly with the squeegee while the material is still warm.

Repositioning Does Not Damage the Wall

If a panel is misaligned, peel it back slowly from the bottom while holding the top, reposition, and re-apply. The adhesive can be repositioned multiple times without damage.

Skipping wall preparationGrease, dust, and residue all prevent adhesion. Proper cleaning takes 15 minutes and determines whether your mural lasts two years or twenty.

Skipping the plumb lineEven a one-degree angle at the first panel multiplies visibly across a full wall. The guide line takes five minutes and prevents a crooked installation that requires complete removal.

Removing all backing at onceThe panel becomes unmanageable, folds onto itself, and adheres before you are in position. Always peel the backing gradually as you apply downward.

Overlapping panel seamsSeams should be butted together, never overlapped. An overlap creates a visible ridge and misaligns the pattern across adjacent panels.

How do I remove air bubbles after installation?

Small bubbles that appear immediately after installation often disappear on their own within 24 to 48 hours as the adhesive fully bonds to the wall.
