Golden Era Walls — The Journal
Vintage in wallpaper design is not a style so much as a quality. It is the quality of something that has lived in the world and been changed by it: the faded tone of paper that has been in a room for decades, the softened colour of a print that has seen many seasons of light, the sense of a design that was made by someone who is gone but whose choices remain present on the wall.
Contemporary vintage-style wallpaper captures this quality without the actual deterioration — producing designs that carry the emotional register of the found rather than the bought, the inherited rather than the chosen. In wallpaper, the vintage quality has specific identifiable characteristics: a warm and slightly muted palette, pattern forms drawn with the slightly imprecise quality of pre-digital printing, and subjects from the botanical and floral illustration traditions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Four design lineages, continuously relevant.
Pro Tip
“Vintage wallpaper works best when it’s the oldest-looking thing in the room. Pair it with contemporary furniture and it reads as curated, not dated.”
Period 01
Victorian Botanical
The natural history print tradition at its most detailed and its most beautiful.
Period 02
Edwardian Florals
The country house floral at its most confident and its most quietly luxurious.
Period 03
Mid-Century Geometric
The earthy geometry of the 1970s, still the most satisfying repeat pattern in the archive.
Period 04
Art Nouveau Organic
The line that follows the natural form. The design language that never stops being right.
Vintage
The most convincing vintage interiors are made by people who simply have excellent taste and are not afraid to act on it.
