The standard advice in interior design allocates the majority of the budget to furniture and treats walls as the background. This is exactly backwards. The walls are what you see first in any room, what your eye returns to continuously throughout the time you spend in the space, and what determines the overall visual character and atmosphere of the room more than any other single element. A room with extraordinary walls and modest furniture feels designed. A room with expensive furniture and blank white walls feels unfinished.

Consider the visual surface area of a standard room. The walls represent a far larger visual surface than the furniture. A 12 × 14-foot room with 9-foot ceilings has approximately 450 square feet of wall surface. The visible surface area of all the furniture in that room might total 50 square feet. The walls represent roughly nine times the visual surface of the furniture — and yet most people spend nine times more money on the furniture.
