Ordering too little wallpaper means a second order and potential dye lot mismatches. Ordering too much wastes money. Getting the calculation right before you buy is the single most important step in any wallpaper project.
Quick formula: (Width × Height) × 1.15 = minimum square footage to order
| Room | Accent Wall | Full Room | With 15% Waste |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small bedroom (10×10, 8ft) | ∼80 | ∼320 | ∼368 |
| Master bedroom (12×14, 9ft) | ∼108 | ∼468 | ∼538 |
| Living room (15×18, 9ft) | ∼135 | ∼594 | ∼683 |
| Dining room (12×12, 9ft) | ∼108 | ∼432 | ∼497 |
Mural-style wallpapers (one continuous image) have no pattern repeat to match — 15% waste is sufficient.
Multiply wall width × height, then multiply by 1.15 for a 15% buffer. Example: 12ft × 9ft = 108 sq ft × 1.15 = 124 sq ft to order.
For most rooms, keep them in your calculation as waste buffer. Only subtract if you have many large openings and are trying to minimize cost.
Order at least 10–15% more than your calculated square footage. For first-time installers or large pattern repeats, use 20–25%.
